  Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I know your work will be safe and meet current regulations?

A. As members of the NICEIC all our work is guaranteed, and we undergo regular inspections to ensure we meet stringent guidelines as set out by them. Through their scheme we are kept informed about changes to the regulations. All electricians have undergone thorough training and a stringent quality control system ensures that work meets our own exacting standards. Owing to the fact that the majority of our team have been directly employed by us for over five years we are able to ensure that our work will meet your satisfaction.

Q. What geographical areas do you cover?

A. Our main areas of work are currently Ringwood, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Southampton. We are happy to travel to most parts of Dorset and Hampshire and will of course consider work in any area. We have completed works in London, Birmingham and even as far afield as France. If you have a requirement in any area please do not hesitate to contact us.

 Q. I only need a new socket installed, is this job too small for you?

A. We believe in offering our customers the widest scope of work that we are able to offer. Electricity, in the wrong hands is dangerous and can kill, and for this reason we would never encourage anyone to carry out their own electrical work. We are happy to be involved with any size of contract, from an additional socket to a large factory installation.

Q. What is an RCD?

A. RCD stands for Residual Current Device. These are what use to be called ELCB’s (Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers). They are usually fitted as standard to most domestic consumer units in houses built after about 1980. Note that they tend to only protect certain parts of the distribution panel wiring (e.g. the kitchen or utility ring main), in a so-called “split-load” consumer unit.  They are designed to quickly trip and interrupt the supply to the circuit they are protecting, when an “imbalance” is detected between the neutral and live in the case of an RCD, or when there is a current in the earth wire of the protected circuit, above a preset limit (usually 30mA), in the true ELCB. You can also purchase “plug-in” ones, ideal for mowers, vacuums, and hair dryers, and an RCD plug (replaces the plug), for things like shower pumps. Although the primary protection is the fuse in the plug, these do not blow for some fault conditions, and they are there mainly to protect the wiring and the appliance from overloads. To protect the user from shocks and earth leakage faults, the RCD is ideal for this.
